A Little Bit About Our Worship

Why?

Worship is our opportunity as believers in Jesus Christ to gather together to tell Jesus how wonderful He is. Our focus is honoring Jesus. Therefore, every Sunday morning worship service is like a blank canvas for the painter. Although we do have certain elements of worship that are consistently present in our services, we always start with a blank canvas in developing the worship that will honor Jesus. We desire to inspire, encourage, comfort, and challenge people in our worship—but our primary goal is honoring the Lord Jesus Christ.

What?

Typically, our worship includes music, Scripture reading, prayer, financial giving, sermon, and response. On any given Sunday, special emphasis may include silence, confession, testimony, or symbolic action. Our two most important symbolic actions are baptism and the Lord’s Supper, but other actions are incorporated to demonstrate devotion and commitment to Jesus.

Music is a very important part of the worship experience. We sing traditional hymns, but utilize contemporary choruses as well. Although our musical offerings to the Lord tend to be more traditional, we look for and welcome any musical expressions that celebrate the Savior. Our hope is that one day we will express our praise with great variety—from rap, to country, to celtic, and everything in between. Our music will always flow out of our congregation’s ability and gift, so we will praise God with the resources and people He supplies.

The Bible is God’s holy, inerrant word to sinful, errant humans. The truth of God found in Scripture is the message of eternal and abundant life through faith in Jesus Christ, so the Bible is a foundational presence in our worship. Proclamation and application of God’s truth honors the Lord and helps His people. Not only do we believe that preaching the Word is essential in worship, but we also believe that reading the Word is vital to honoring the Lord. Therefore, many Bible passages are read by individuals or by the congregation as acts of worship.

Prayer is another foundational practice in our worship. We understand prayer as being more than making requests to God, although that is an important aspect of prayer. Prayer is our intentional conversation with God—talking to Him and listening to Him. Sometimes our prayer is public and audible; at other times, we allow for private, silent prayers during our worship. Always, however, prayer is inherent in our worship because worship itself is an expression of praise and commitment to God.

When?

In any given week, we have three major opportunities for congregational worship. On Sunday mornings, we gather for our primary worship of the week. As our most formal and structured worship time, many different expressions of worship are employed, including a more traditional sermon. Sunday evenings generally focus on extensive Bible study led by the pastor. usually, two or three thematic Bible study series are conducted in a year. Wednesday nights, we gather as a body of Christ to focus specifically on prayer. Prayer meeting is a time of ministry to fellow church members, the community, missionaries, and the people of the world.

How?

First-time visitors to any event anywhere often have questions about what will happen and one’s personal involvement in what happens. At First Baptist Church, we want you to participate at your own comfort level. Some people might worry about what to wear. All types of wardrobe are accepted here. Others wonder if they will know what to do and when to do it—with rare exceptions, we provide a printed order of worship to guide worshipers before and during the service. A visitor to our church might wonder if he must contribute to the church offering. The answer is “no.” We do not want anybody’s money. We want people to honor Jesus. When you come to worship with us, you will be our honored guest, and we want you to feel at home with us.
